Mark Sanchez says there's 'no doubt' he won the Jets quarterback competition
When the Patriots and Jets square off in Week 2 on Thursday night (did you know? You can start previewing it with CBSSports.com's live show at 7:30 p.m. ET right here) Mark Sanchez will be nowhere to be seen. The Jets backup quarterback was reportedly slated to have season-ending surgery but it appears that's not the case.
In fact, Sanchez told NFL Network's Rich Eisen that his doctors are "pleasantly surprised" by the way he's progressing and that he plans to "get back on the field" for the Jets in 2013.

That's a certainly surprise, and potentially too optimistic. Not that Sanchez and his doctors are wrong about his health, per se, but they might be wrong about the Jets actually playing him once he returns. The injury, of course, was the highlight of the Jets season.
But the real highlight of Eisen's conversation with Sanchez was the backup saying "there's no doubt" he beat out Geno Smith to be the Jets starter before his preseason injury occurred.
Sanchez said he is eager to be there for Geno, but added he's disappointed in getting hurt because "I won the competition. There's no doubt"

Spicy! This is a great claim for a couple of reasons. First it's got confidence. And confidence is always good, even if it's misplaced. Two, it creates drama. The Jets definitely need more drama.
Third, finally and most importantly, this should create a nice little media storm before the Jets play on Thursday night and then afterwards, especially if Geno doesn't put up big numbers against the Pats. It's really irrelevant because Sanchez is injured, but him believing that he won should provide lots of fodder for folks asking Rex Ryan questions after the game, especially if they can't push out to 2-0.
